What is full-coverage auto insurance?
If you’ve been looking everywhere for full-coverage auto insurance and you can’t find it, this is why — full coverage doesn’t exist.
Where to get full coverage?
Again, full coverage doesn’t exist, but when people say “full coverage” what they may mean is that they want everything covered. If their car is damaged, they think, insurance should pay.
Unfortunately, it’s not that simple. Some auto policies may only cover liability, which is the cost of damage you cause to other people’s properties or bodies. This is what is often required by state law to have.
A step up from this would be “comprehensive” coverage, which is likely what is meant when people say they “have full coverage.” “Comprehensive” coverage insures damage to your vehicle in the event of certain covered events. This often includes hail, certain disasters and theft.
But even “comprehensive” coverage won’t cover your property in the event of an at-fault accident. For that you’d want “collision” coverage, which provides coverage for your car in the event of an accident, regardless of fault.
“Comprehensive” and “Collision” begin to approach what might be considered “full” coverage, but again, won’t cover you in all scenarios. All insurance policies will only cover you for the loss events listed in your policy, which is why it’s important to be informed about the actual terms of your policy.
