Does Home Insurance Cover Natural Disasters?

The silhouette of a helicopter flies through smoke from a wildfire.

Does home insurance cover natural disasters? Short answer: Most disasters. More accurate answer: It's complicated.

As with every insurance question, there's never a simple yes or no answer. If you have coverage questions, it's always best that you reach out to your insurance agent. And if you don't have one, consider finding a Foremost insurance agent near you.

Home insurance only covers damage that is "direct, abrupt and accidental" and resulting from one of the "covered perils" contained in your policy. Many natural disasters are typically covered in a homeowner's policy ranging from windstorm and hail damage to fire.

However, some perils such as flood damage or earthquakes are typically excluded. Flood and earthquake insurance are usually bought separately from your homeowner's policy, highlighting the importance of reading through your policy's specifics.

Make sure you're covered for what you want to be and find a Foremost® Agent near you or call us at 888-244-8092.
