What to do after a house fire

An out of control roaring house fire

There are so many things to think about after a house fire, but it's important to stay focused and safety-minded. Some of the first items you'll need to consider are:

  • Injury

If you are injured or anyone with you is injured, call 911. Cover any burns to prevent infection.
  • Steering clear

Do not enter the damaged building until given the all-clear by the fire department. If you reenter and detect any heat or smoke, leave immediately.
  • Insurance

Contact your insurance company and if you are a renter, contact your landlord.
  • Clearing out

If you need to leave the home and find temporary housing, try to remove any valuables that you can (if possible) then have somebody you trust keep an eye on the property.
