A night honoring heroes, sheroes and businesses that matter to the African American Community

Live auction, live jazz, dancing and community toast included during this evening of recognition and inspiration 

Grand Rapids, Mich., January 24, 2008 – On Saturday, February 16, 2008, at 6:30 p.m. at the Amway Grand Plaza , two distinguished individuals and two corporations will be honored for their contribution toward making Grand Rapids a more diverse and inclusive community through advocacy and a commitment to excellence:

Ruth Jones, author and retired educator
Doyle Hayes, business leader and board volunteer
Brown's Funeral Home, LTD
Mercantile Bank of Michigan

“These individuals and corporations are vitally important to the African American community,” said Emily Kathi of Foremost Insurance Company. “They have created a lasting legacy and it's still growing strong. They symbolize success and are an essential element to the fabric of our community.”

The evening will start out with a VIP reception sponsored by TDS Metrocom and book signing one hour prior to the dinner. Author and keynote speaker for the evening, Dr. Randal Maurice Jelks will be signing copies of his book, “African Americans in the Furniture City.”

The dinner will be held in the majestic Pantlind Ballroom and the master and mistress of ceremonies for the evening will be WOOD T V 8 morning anchor Jennifer Moss and Michigan State Senator Bill Hardiman. The evening will also include a live auction of unique items, entertainment provided by the Silver Knights, and a “Community Toast” featuring Hon. George Heartwell, Mayor of Grand Rapids and Rev. Dr. David Jarrett, Pastor of First Community AME.

Cost of the event is $75.00 and net proceeds will benefit two organizations: Grand Rapids African American Health Institute and Making Great Waves.
